Therapy Knots

People who call me for counseling often feel hopeless.

They report “trying” lots of things to change their mood, drinking patterns, communication, or relationship issues.
Sometimes the things they’ve tried make perfect sense.

They should work. Yet, they may not.

It’s like rowing a boat as hard as you can.

You feel frustrated.
The harder you push the more depleted you feel.

Perhaps you discover that the boat is tethered to a dock. No matter how hard you try you won’t get free because the rope is tangled in ways you cannot see or unravel.

People think, oh sure, just untie it. Isn’t it obvious how to do that?
Maybe. Maybe not.

Sometimes pulling on it makes it worse. You have to strategically figure how to untangle it.

Therapists not only may be able to see the rope but understand what’s required to help you undo those knots.
